Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis alternata)

While shopping today at the Modern Plantsman in Wapakoneta, Ohio I purchased this lovely start which appears to be the Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis alternata).   It's often valued for its crinkled leaf pattern, which gives it a “waffle” appearance. I like that it adds a pop of color and texture to the plant shelf.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance: The most distinctive feature of the Purple Waffle Plant is its deep purple or burgundy-colored leaves, which often have a metallic sheen. The leaves are broad, with a rippled, wavy texture that gives the plant its "waffle" look. The undersides of the leaves tend to be a lighter shade of purple or green.

  • Growth Habit: It is a creeping or spreading groundcover, typically growing to about 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) tall, with stems that can spread several feet in length if allowed to trail. It can also grow in hanging baskets, where its trailing nature is appreciated.

  • Flowers: While the plant is mainly grown for its foliage, it does produce small, inconspicuous flowers in the late spring or summer. The flowers are usually white or light purple and appear in clusters, but they’re not the main attraction for most people—it's the foliage that steals the show!

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: The Purple Waffle Plant thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but its colors may become less intense if it's kept in too much shade. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so it's best to keep it in a spot with filtered light.

  • Watering: Like most tropical plants, it enjoys a bit of humidity and regular moisture, but it's important not to overwater. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring that the pot has good drainage.

  • Soil: A well-draining, lightweight potting mix works best. A general houseplant mix with added perlite or a mix formulated for tropical plants usually works well.

  • Temperature: The Purple Waffle Plant prefers warm temperatures and humidity, similar to its native Southeast Asian habitat. It does best in temperatures between 60°F and 80°F
